You Are A Badass – How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life
As part of our effort here at Numberwise to ‘keep getting better’ we’re diving into books on business, productivity, mindset, and more in our book club series. Our talented accounting manager, Stephanie, discusses her book choice below.
I chose You Are A Badass – How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero. The basic premise is how to go about making changes in your life to achieve what you really want.
“If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way.
If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.”
Truthfully, I chose this book because of the title – it made me laugh! I was curious to dive in and I was not disappointed. There are so many takeaways from this book to apply in all aspects of your life. It’s not just about improving your professional life, but also your personal life, family life and your overall interactions with others.
Part of being a badass is being yourself. Not the self other’s think you should be, but who you truly are. Jen argues that doing what you love and living for yourself will make you both happier and richer.
Self-confidence and tons of self-love are vital to being your authentic self. Following are Jen’s tips to increase the love you have for yourself:
- Appreciate how special you are
- Drown yourself in affirmations
- Do things you love
- Ditch the self-deprecating humor
- Let the love in
- Don’t compare yourself to others
- Forgive yourself
Jen also writes about how we’re conditioned to have a negative reaction when people say they’re doing something outside of the norm. One example that they give is “quitting my secure, full-time job to become an actor.” Most people would scoff at the idea but the book discusses how we should not smear our fear on our friends/loved ones.
I just experienced a similar situation in my own life with a good friend. My friend’s husband quit his great job, they decided to sell their house and move to Costa Rica with their kids for a period of time. When I heard the news, I had to stop myself from freaking out and congratulate them on making such a life changing decision to follow their dream.
“Because so often when we say we’re unqualified for something, what we’re really saying is that we’re too scared to try it, not that we can’t do it.”
You Are a Badass is written in a funny, light manner, yet it holds meaningful advice. It’s incredibly inspirational and has made me think twice about how I approach situations. This book kicks butt, and I would recommend it to anyone.
“The only failure is quitting. Everything else is just gathering information.”
